A GA4 Setup Guide That Avoids The Usual Mess
Configure the handful of things that matter, ignore the rest, and you'll have reporting you can trust.
GA4 is flexible enough to be configured badly in a hundred ways. The setup below covers the decisions that actually affect data quality, in the order they should be made.
Foundation
- Create the property with the correct reporting time zone and currency — changing these later doesn't rewrite history.
- Set data retention to the longest available option immediately; it isn't retroactive.
- Enable Google Signals only if your privacy posture and disclosures support it.
- Configure internal traffic filters and exclude your own IPs and staging domains.
- Add unwanted referrals for payment gateways so checkout doesn't fragment your sessions.
Events and conversions
- Use a consistent naming convention: lowercase, underscores, verb_noun.
- Mark only genuine business outcomes as key events — not page views or scrolls.
- Pass value and currency on revenue events, and use the standard ecommerce event names so built-in reports work.
- Register custom dimensions for the parameters you actually report on, before you need them.
Attribution and data sharing
Understand your attribution setting and reporting window, and document them, because they explain most discrepancies with ad platforms. Link Google Ads and Search Console. Enable BigQuery export if you have any analytics maturity at all — it's free-tier friendly and gives you the raw data when the interface disagrees with itself.
Consent and privacy
Implement consent mode properly with your banner, test both granted and denied states, and confirm your privacy policy describes what you collect. Data quality and compliance are the same project here.
Set expectations
GA4 will never match your ad platforms exactly — different attribution models, windows and identity. Pick one number for business decisions and use the others as diagnostics.
