Search & GEO
SEO vs GEO: What Changes, What Doesn't
They share a foundation and diverge at the top. Running them as separate programs wastes most of the compounding.
The useful framing isn't SEO versus GEO. It's one discovery program with two output surfaces: a ranked list, and a synthesised answer. The foundation is shared; the optimisation targets differ.
What doesn't change
- Crawlability, speed and clean information architecture.
- Genuinely useful content that answers a real question.
- Authority built through citation and mention by credible sources.
- Accurate, consistent business information everywhere it appears.
What changes
- Target: a ranking position versus inclusion in an answer.
- Unit: a page versus a claim or fact.
- Measurement: rank and clicks versus citation presence and mention accuracy.
- Content shape: comprehensive depth versus extractable precision — you now need both on the same page.
Writing for both at once
Lead each section with a direct, quotable answer in one or two sentences, then expand for the human who wants depth. Use specific numbers and named conditions rather than hedged generalities. Keep definitions clean enough to be lifted without losing meaning. This structure serves the skimmer, the ranked snippet and the model equally.
Budget implications
Most teams don't need a separate GEO line item. They need to add entity hygiene, comparison content, and third-party corroboration to an existing SEO program, then measure two things instead of one. Where GEO does deserve dedicated budget is digital PR and directory accuracy — the off-site work that classic SEO programs often underfund.
A practical test
Ask an assistant to describe your brand and recommend alternatives in your category. If the description is wrong or you're absent, your problem is entity clarity and corroboration, not content volume.
