Landing Page Conversion Principles

Message match, speed, clarity and friction removal — in that order. Most 'redesigns' skip straight to the least important one.

A landing page has one job: continue the conversation the ad started, then remove every reason not to act. Almost all conversion problems are a failure of continuity, speed or clarity — not of visual design.

1. Message match

The claim, image and price in the ad should be visible above the fold without scrolling. If someone clicks an ad about a specific problem and lands on a generic homepage, you've paid for a visit and then asked the visitor to do the navigation. Build modular pages so each ad angle has a destination that agrees with it.

2. Speed, measured honestly

  • Test on a mid-range Android on mobile data, not a desktop on office wifi.
  • Largest Contentful Paint under about 2.5 seconds; every second beyond that costs conversions.
  • Compress and correctly size images; serve modern formats; lazy-load below the fold.
  • Audit third-party scripts ruthlessly — tag managers are where speed goes to die.

3. Clarity

  1. One primary action per page, repeated as the user scrolls.
  2. Price, shipping and delivery expectations stated plainly, early.
  3. The top three objections answered where they arise, not buried in an FAQ.
  4. Specific proof — numbers, named sources, real reviews — instead of logo walls.

4. Friction

Every field, step and decision costs you completions. Remove optional fields, offer the payment and login methods your audience uses, support autofill properly, and never surprise anyone with a cost at the final step.

How to test

One hypothesis at a time, with enough traffic to reach a decision, and a documented result. Sequential testing with honest sample sizes beats a dashboard full of inconclusive A/B tests.

The fastest win in most accounts

Match the landing page to the ad angle. It usually outperforms any redesign, and it takes an afternoon.
