How To Find Winning Ad Hooks

Stop inventing hooks. Harvest them from the places your customers already explain themselves.

The best-performing opening lines are almost never written in a creative session. They're transcribed. Customers already articulate the problem, the hesitation and the relief better than any copywriter guessing at it — you just have to go where they said it.

Five sources worth mining

  • Reviews, especially three-star ones, where people explain both the objection and the resolution.
  • Support tickets and pre-purchase questions — the friction that costs you orders.
  • Comment sections on competitor content, where skepticism is unfiltered.
  • Sales and consult call transcripts, for the sentence that made someone decide.
  • Search and in-app search queries, for the words people use when nobody's watching.

Turn language into hook structures

  1. Name the problem with a specific detail: "by 2pm", "week three", "third wash".
  2. Contradict a category assumption, then justify it immediately.
  3. State a result with a number and a timeframe you can actually support.
  4. Ask the exact question your support inbox receives most.
  5. Show the failure state first, then the fix.

Testing hooks cheaply

Keep everything after the first three seconds identical, and vary only the opening. Five hooks on one body gives you a clean read on attention independent of the rest of the creative. Judge on hook rate first, then check whether the winning hook also holds — a hook that attracts the wrong expectation will spike views and sink conversion.

A working rule

If the first line could be said by any brand in your category, it isn't a hook. Specificity is the entire mechanism.

Once you find a hook that works, resist the urge to retire it early. Rewrite it fifteen ways, run it across formats, and let the audience tell you when it's finished.
