How To Build A Community Around A Brand

Communities form around a shared identity and a repeated ritual — not around a product or a discount code.

Most brand communities fail because they're built around the brand. People don't gather to discuss a company; they gather around something they have in common, in a place with recognisable rituals and status. The brand's job is to host, not to star.

The three requirements

  1. A shared identity people would claim publicly — a practice, a taste, a standard, a stage of life.
  2. A ritual that repeats: a weekly thread, a monthly drop, a recurring challenge, a standing call.
  3. Visible status: ways for members to be recognised by other members, not just by you.

Choosing a venue

  • Comments and DMs on the platform where your audience already is — lowest friction, highest reach.
  • A broadcast channel for intimacy at scale, with a strict value-per-message standard.
  • A dedicated space (Discord, forum, group) only when members want to talk to each other, not to you.
  • In-person moments, which convert loose audiences into committed ones faster than anything online.

Operating it

Name an owner. Reply in your own voice. Surface members' work constantly. Enforce standards early — the first tolerated bad behaviour sets the norm. Feed what you learn back into product and creative so members can see their influence, which is the strongest retention mechanic available.

What to measure

Active participation rate, returning participation month over month, member-to-member interactions, and repeat purchase rate among community members versus a matched non-member cohort. Community is a retention program, so measure it like one.

A warning

A community is a commitment with no natural end date. Don't start one you can't staff in twelve months.
